“In the mountains, the shortest way is from peak to peak: but for that you must have long legs”
Any activity that takes more than 5 hours of continues effort is sure going to test your body’s endurance both at mental and physical level. The idea over here is to start doing things that can increase the endurance level of our body, which in turn will lift our spirit and improve our attitude towards our life. Everyone has his or her view points on the activity they are going to choose to get the self satisfaction. I find marathon hiking as one of a good way to bring back the focus.
Hiking is like a full fledged project. You first decide your end objective. Gather information from people who have achieved similar feats. Then plan the course of action. Get necessary tools and stuff that will be needed on the way. Get focused and then start the journey.
The reason why I’m focusing on 5hr+ hiking is because the temperament that is needed in a 5hr+ is different than the one that is needed in a 1hr sport. The kind of lesson that we learn in a 1hr sport and the one that we learn in 5+hr activity are different.
Few of the things that I really love during mountain hiking is the level of patience that is needed. Standing on one peak you can see the next one, but it takes time and effort to reach there. Moreover the most difficult part is while walking under the canopy of trees, the peaks are so elusive that for 2-3 hours you can see nothing and then suddenly you reach the peak top. It’s just the way the things are in life, one doesn’t know when the goal will be reached but if you keep on walking, one fine day you will reach there.
Other than this I believe the views that one can see from the top of the peaks are nature’s prize for you. Nature is the most powerful of all and we need to respect her. One has to work hard to reach the top and once you have reached the top, you would have become extremely humble and nature will reward you with the views that no one else standing on the base of the mountain can every have.
Besides these every time I do marathon hiking I find that my mind become more relaxed, focused and does not wander here and there, it’s like you become less anxious about things. The glow in the body increases as most of toxins have been released. Lungs get opened with plenty of fresh air. The muscles pain in the beginning but then start the process of rebuilding into a better unit.
